Guidelines for Public Use of the
Barneston Flood Control Facility and Adjacent Lands

Who owns the Barneston Facility and the adjacent lands?

  • Chester County Water Resources Authority owns approximately 177 acres including the Barneston Dam.

Where are these lands located?

  • This property lies southwest of Route 282 and to the east and west of Route 82, in Wallace and West Nantmeal Townships.
  • The land is adjacent to the East Branch Brandywine Creek and surrounds the Barneston Flood Control Facility.

Is the public allowed to access these lands?

  • These lands are open to the public, however access to the earthen dam, its inlet and outlet are strictly prohibited.
  • Safe access to walk the property and trails can be gained by parking in the parking lot on Creek Road and using the access path that leads to the access drive.

Is hunting and trapping allowed on these lands?

  • Hunting and trapping are permitted on this land in accordance with applicable laws and regulations, which are strictly enforced.
  • The Pennsylvania Game Commission manages these lands for all day use activities as part of the Cooperative Safety Zone Program.
  • Residents should be advised that various hunting and trapping seasons on the property take place from September through March 31.

How can I safely enjoy these lands?

  • Keep dogs leashed at all times. Active trapping occurs on and surrounding the dam structure year-round.
  • During public hunting and trapping seasons, we recommend that everyone wear bright orange, and be extremely mindful if walking off trail or beyond mowed areas to avoid traps.
  • Avoid rapidly rising floodwaters.

Are ATV's or motorcycles permitted on these lands or on the old rail bed?

  • No. To ensure everyone's safety and enjoyment of the area, motorized vehicles, overnight use and fires are prohibited.
  • These rules are strictly enforced by the PA Game Commission.

Call 911 for emergency response or to report suspicious activity at the dam structure. Contact the PA Game Commission Wildlife Conservation Officer at 610.926.3137 to report other violations.
